^HOVER^
Vitiligo is a long-term skin condition that continuously spreads. It produces white patches of depigmentation and contrary to popular belief, it is not contagious. When the body's immune cells mistakenly attack and kill melanocytes, there is a lack of skin cells(melanocytes) that are in charge of creating melanin-the cells that produce colour and protect the skin from UV rays. Once this occurs, the skin is very vulnerable.
What to expect if you have vitiligo
The course of vitiligo is unpredictable and is unsure whether pigmentation will come back. It is very possible an increase of skin will be affected by vitiligo over time. If pigmentation does in fact come back, regained pigmentation may be darker or lighter than surrounding areas of skin. Over time, vitiligo has a great chance of worsening. Do not worry, vitiligo is NOT contagious.
